There are more than 100 types of arthritis and related joint conditions such as gout. But the most common types are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here are some of the differences:
Osteoarthritis (OA)
- A joint condition that causes pain and loss of movement, along with loss of cartilage and degradation of cushioning fluid in the joint
- Mostly affects people over 40
- The most common joint condition worldwide. Affects 21 million Americans
- Often takes a long time to develop
- Affects a few joints, including knees, hips, hands and spine
- Minimal joint warmth, redness and swelling. Morning stiffness, if any, usually lasts 20 minutes or less
- No general symptoms, such as fatigue or fever
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
- A systemic, autoimmune disease which causes the joint lining to become inflamed
- Usually starts between the ages of 25 and 50
- Affects 2.1 million people in the U.S., mostly women
- May develop within weeks or months
- Affects many joints, including wrists, knees, hips, hands and spine
- Causes warmth, redness and swelling. Prolonged morning stiffness, lasting for hours
- Can cause general feeling of sickness, fatigue and weight loss
